Il Giardino is run by Giovanni who inherited the old farmhouse form his father. It lies in the midst of an olive grove, and persimmons, chestnuts and oak trees grow over all of the surrounding hills. Giovanni knows this land like the back of his hand and is passionate about local history and the traditions of the area. He took us on a walk around his land, showing us old water mills once used to mill grain for flour and olive presses, ancient mule tracks used in the last century and the remains of a pre-christian sacred circle at the edge of a small stream which runs along the bottom of the house's gardens.
In the morning, feast on persimmons in season, yoghurt, fresh fruit and juices, frothy capuccino, toast and preserves. Breakfast is served under a wooden awning in the front garden when weather permits. There's also an stone bread and pizza oven, barbecue and large fireplace in the garden for the guest's use. Our bedroom was large and airy, with lovely old oak furniture. We had a terrace over-looking the village and the olive trees and a kitchenette with table, chairs and fridge. There's even BBC world service on tv if you really can't live without some news!
Rooms cost 35-45 per person per night (including breakfast).
Apartments were 500-600 euros a week for up to five people sharing.
For shops go to nearby Futani, about 4 km by car, or if you want a good local restaurant, go to "Dal Notaro" in Ceraso, about 20 euros a head for a two course meal and wine.
