Agriturismo San Carlo

Agriturismo San Carlo
via Noce, 8
84040 CAPRIOLI di PISCIOTTA (SA)

Tel. 3496937145 - 3476761300

The Agriturismo San Carlo is a particular building because it houses not only an enormous and intact olive oil press in the central dining hall but restoreres have also recently uncovered original frescoes inside a private chapel which once belonged to the owner of this large stone building built on a steep slope over-looking the sea towards Palinuro. Views from up here are stunning, the terrace and breakfast area get full sunlight until late afternoon, small private cove beaches are accessible on foot for the intrepid (steep slopes) and by car about 15 minutes are beaches for those who prefer to take it easy on miles of golden sand.

The owners of the agriturismo produce olive oil and run a riding stables of which guests are of course invited to make use of. At breakfast fresh baked bread, home-made jams and preserves, fresh seasonal fruit and honey from the local beekeeper are all served in the oil press room, or out on the sunny terrace under the shade of a centuries old oak tree. The agriturismo also contains a trattoria with good, honest, local food and traditional cilento dishes. For excellent simple seafood dishes however, drive a few kms down the road to Marina di Pisciotta right on the waterfront and eat at Angiolina's, a bit of a local food hero in this part of Cilento.

High season is only August, but really the best time to visit the coast is september or july when the weather is balmy, the evenings still warm, the sea is cool and there aren't masses of tourists.

Rooms are 25 euros per person per night (including breakfast)
40 euros for half board
50 euros for full board.

In high season (august) add ten euros to all the above prices.

Il Giardino is run by Giovanni who inherited the old farmhouse form his father. It lies in the midst of an olive grove, and persimmons, chestnuts and oak trees grow over all of the surrounding hills. Giovanni knows this land like the back of his hand and is passionate about local history and the traditions of the area. He took us on a walk around his land, showing us old water mills once used to mill grain for flour and olive presses, ancient mule tracks used in the last century and the remains of a pre-christian sacred circle at the edge of a small stream which runs along the bottom of the house's gardens.

In the morning, feast on persimmons in season, yoghurt, fresh fruit and juices, frothy capuccino, toast and preserves. Breakfast is served under a wooden awning in the front garden when weather permits. There's also an stone bread and pizza oven, barbecue and large fireplace in the garden for the guest's use. Our bedroom was large and airy, with lovely old oak furniture. We had a terrace over-looking the village and the olive trees and a kitchenette with table, chairs and fridge. There's even BBC world service on tv if you really can't live without some news!

Rooms cost 35-45 per person per night (including breakfast).
Apartments were 500-600 euros a week for up to five people sharing.

For shops go to nearby Futani, about 4 km by car, or if you want a good local restaurant, go to "Dal Notaro" in Ceraso, about 20 euros a head for a two course meal and wine.

Adele is the charming and chatty owner of Il Portico, housed on two floors. THe kitchen and dining area is part of her house and she will invite you to a generous breakfast with her in the mornings and 5 p.m prepares delicious, and perfectly executed English afternoon tea in front of her log fire. Adele is very involved in the local community and enjoys preserving and promoting Cilentano culture, she collects traditional folk instruments and hosts local artists, potters and weavers to exhibit at her house during traditional village festivals.

The apartment itself has two rooms, a double room and a twin single room. Both are decorated with antique wrought iron beds, fluffy towels and thick cosy blankets for those cool mountain nights. There is a large terrace upstairs where breakfast is served in summer and a flowered courtyard downstairs both ideal for chilling out and enjoying a quiet read. When we stayed here it was chestnut season and for breakfast we were served sweet stewed chestnuts with bay leaves and wild fennel according to a cilentan recipe - but Adele also provides fresh bread, home-made cookies, home-made jams and preserves, local cheese and fresh eggs any way you want them when available.

Prices range from 25-35 euros a night per person (including breakfast) depending on the season.

When staying here an excellent place to eat is "Da Mario" in Ceraso, about 10 km away by car, ask Adele for more information.
